India Floods the Internet With #SelfieWithDaughter Photos

As part of his Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao (Save the Daughter, Educate the Daughter) campaign, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a call to his country to celebrate the girl child in one of today’s most popular ways: using social media. His appeal was for parents to share a photo with their daughter using the hashtag #SelfieWithDaughter, and thousands positively responded.

PM Modi mentioned in an interview with the Indian Express that the idea for this social media push was brought to him by the head of a small village in Haryana, which has one of the most skewed sex ratio in the country. Bibipur, or “the women’s world,” is a village in Haryana that is working on spreading awareness of women’s issues and bringing women into the limelight. Read more here.

This campaign is certainly an inspiring example of culture change! It proves that a small group of people can have a significant impact when they stand for justice.
